Dental Implant Recovery: A Week-by-Week Timeline

What to expect from day 1 to month 6 — pain, food, work, and when you'll finally bite into an apple again.

Dental implant recovery is far easier than most people expect. Most patients are back at work within 1–2 days. The long part of the journey is healing under the gum — but that's invisible.

Day 0–2: the recovery window

  • Mild swelling and bruising peaks at 48 hours.
  • Pain is typically managed with ibuprofen alone.
  • Stick to soft, cool foods — yogurt, smoothies, scrambled eggs.
  • No rinsing, spitting, or straws for 24 hours.

Week 1–2: back to normal

Soft tissue heals. You can eat most things, just chew on the opposite side. We see you at 10–14 days to check the site.

Month 1–4: osseointegration

The implant fuses to your jawbone. This is invisible from the outside. You'll often have a temporary crown or bridge during this time.

Month 4–6: final crown

Once the implant is fully integrated, we place the final crown. It looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth — usually indistinguishable in photos.
